Heritage Development Projects Camp

Overview

The Heritage Development Projects Camp was a unique initiative organized by the Raquda Foundation for Art and Heritage, in collaboration with Beit Yakan and the Waikandi Initiative. Held in the heart of historic Cairo, one of the most important world heritage sites, the camp aimed to educate young people about heritage and its development.

Goals

The camp’s primary goal was to empower young people to become active participants in the development of their communities’ heritage. The camp covered several points and concerns:

  • Fostering cultural communication: The camp encouraged dialogue and collaboration between decision-makers, the community, and specialists to ensure that development projects are culturally sensitive and responsive to local needs.
  • Preserving heritage values: Participants learned how to identify and assess the significance of cultural heritage, and how to integrate these values into sustainable development plans.
  • Promoting economic development: The camp explored ways to leverage cultural heritage for sustainable economic growth, such as through the marketing and branding of traditional craft products.

The focus was also on traditional and historical clothing by monitoring and reviving the crafts of “Egyptian embroidery and knitting,” for which the historical region was famous, and highlighting the value of this craft by preparing an exhibition for it at the end of the camp period.
