Cycling to Alexandria Heritage

In 2017, by the collaboration of the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, and with the  partnership of various partners including 3agal Masr, the Arab Center for Arab Studies, Faculty of Arts at the University of Alexandria, Careem and Up Hill Gym. The Raquda Foundation for Art and Heritage launched the initiative “Cycling to Alexandria Heritage .”

The initiative aims to share awareness and integrate the community in the streets of Alexandria by changing the traditional guided tours into a cycling marathon that passes through the city’s heritage sites. Also,  competitive elements and valuable prizes provided by sponsors like Careem and Gym UpHill were introduced to enhance the competitiveness of who participated in the marathon.

Participants from different nationalities and ages took part in the initiative along four rounds, visiting numerous heritage sites in Alexandria, such as the Catacombs Kom El Shoqafa Karmouz, the Roman Theater, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Kom El Deka, Mustafa Kamel Tombs, Qaitbay Citadel, the National Museum of Alexandria, and the Montazah Palace. Even the closed sites for restoration, like Kom El Nadoura, were opened for the tour by the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities as one of the sponsors.

Further, the first volunteer program for the Raquda Foundation was launched on the sidelines of the initiative, with the participation of more than 35 volunteers. Volunteers were prepared through workshops and meetings, including the workshop conducted by Dr. Mona Hagag, the director of the Antiquities Association in Alexandria and an archaeologist at the Faculty of Arts, Alexandria University.
