Initiative of Alexandria World Heritage Centre Simulation

Overview

The Initiative of Alexandria World Heritage Centre Simulation (AWHS) is a program launched by the Raquda Foundation for Art and Heritage in cooperation with the Alexandria Center for Hellenistic Studies at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. The program aims to teach the youth about Alexandrian heritage management through a simulation of the World Heritage Center, which is followed by UNESCO. The purpose of the initiative is to create a new generation who can work on heritage management, whether it is tangible or intangible, and who can also advocate for the inclusion of Alexandria on the World Heritage List.

While the youth participating in the initiative in the second phase wrote and prepared files for tangible and intangible heritage, and in the third phase, the files presented  by the participating youth were discussed and then voted on to choose the winning file.

Program Structure

The AWHS is divided into three stages:

  • Training stage: This stage consists of a series of lectures and workshops on heritage management and preservation, led by national and international experts.
  • Applied project: Participants in the program work on a collaborative project to apply the knowledge they have gained in the training stage to a specific aspect of Alexandrian heritage.
  • World Heritage Center simulation: Participants organize and participate in a conference that simulates the World Heritage Center, where they present their applied projects and discuss the challenges and opportunities of heritage management in Alexandria.
Importance of the Initiative

The AWHS is an important initiative for the preservation and promotion of Alexandria’s rich heritage. It is also a valuable opportunity for young people to learn about heritage management and develop the skills they need to contribute to the protection and promotion of cultural heritage
